Ernest Boyd, RPh, who has served as the Executive Director of the Ohio Pharmacists Association since 1988, was named recipient of the Charles M. West Distinguished American Award on Sunday, October 14 during the First General Session of the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) 114th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition held from October 13-17 in San Diego. The award recognizes an individual for their outstanding service to independent community pharmacists of America.
"Ernie Boyd has been a tireless advocate for pharmacy at the state and federal level for decades," said Lonny Wilson, DPh, NCPA president and pharmacy owner in Oklahoma City, OK. "That is embodied through the annual Ohio Pharmacists Association Legislative Day that he spearheads, and always being an important presence at the annual NCPA Legislative Conference in Washington, DC. Ernie believes in leaving no stone unturned in the quest to ensure the government is not an impediment to pharmacies in the rapidly changing marketplace."
Before joining the Ohio Pharmacists Association, he was the Assistant Executive Director of the Indiana Pharmacists Association; the Assistant Chief Pharmacist at the Regenstrief Health Center in Indianapolis, IN; Manager of the Prescription Shop in Athens, Oh; and a Staff Pharmacist at Obleness Hospital in Athens, OH.
Boyd holds many professional affiliations and government appointments and is a regular writer for the Ohio Pharmacists Association's magazine and continues to guest lecture at Ohio Northern University, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Toledo, Ohio State University and the University of Findlay.
Boyd has received numerous other awards. In 2009 the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy recognized him for his service; in 2008 he received the Beal Award for contributions to the profession of pharmacy; in 2001 he received the Thomas R. King Distinguished Service Award for service to the Ohio Society of Association Executives; in 1996 he received the Ralph V. Foster Friend of ASP Award from Ohio State University; and in 1991 he received the Keys Award for service to the Ohio Pharmacists Association.
The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA®) represents the interests of America's community pharmacists, including the owners of more than 23,000 independent community pharmacies. Together they represent a $93 billion health care marketplace, dispense nearly 40% of all retail prescriptions, and employ more than 315,000 people, including 62,400 pharmacists. Independent community pharmacists are readily accessible medication experts who can help lower health care spending. They are committed to maximizing the appropriate use of lower-cost generic drugs and reducing the estimated $290 billion that is wasted annually by improper medication use.
