Student Chapter Project Opportunity—NCPA Foundation Bone Marrow Donor Drive

November is National Bone Marrow Awareness Month and your NCPA student chapter can help increase the national bone marrow registry and ultimately save lives! The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) Foundation is partnering with DKMS, the world's largest bone marrow donor center, during November 8-12, 2010 for the second annual NCPA Foundation Bone Marrow Donor Drive.

The need for bone marrow donors was brought to the attention of the NCPA Foundation through independent pharmacy owner David Wilcox from Fresno, California. David's adopted son, Javier, was diagnosed with leukemia in November 2008 and has been searching for a bone marrow match ever since. Because of his ethnicity, it has been difficult for Javier to find a match—there simply aren't enough Hispanic donors. However, this treatment may be his only chance to beat the blood cancer.

NCPA Student Chapters can assist with the Bone Marrow Drive by encouraging local pharmacies to participate, helping to promote the drive in your community, and by helping local pharmacies with logistics during the actual event. Contact ncpaf@ncpanet.org to find out if a pharmacy near you is participating! If a pharmacy near you is interested in conducting a donor drive at the pharmacy, ask the pharmacist to email ncpaf@ncpanet.org with their first and last name, pharmacy name, mailing address, and phone number.

Student Testimonial:
"I attended this convention to see if my dream to one day own my own independent pharmacy could become a reality. I was pleasantly surprised with how possible it is to get started in independent pharmacy and how successful one can be. The convention also fanned the flame of passion that I have for the profession of pharmacy and I could not be more proud of this profession and what we are doing to help communities across the nation."

CVS Caremark Update
NCPA staff deeply appreciates the many examples our members have provided us to help illustrate the damaging effects of the CVS Caremark merger on independent pharmacies and their patients. But we still need your help! We must keep up the pressure as the Federal Trade Commission and attorneys general from 24+ states continue investigations of the company. Your experiences and those of your patients, especially those in rural areas served primarily by independent community pharmacy, are important to us and policy makers as they provide a personal face to CVS' disturbing business practices.

  1. Contact your member of Congress here and ask them to weigh in on the FTC investigation.
  2. A group of Attorneys General from 24 states and municipalities are also investigating CVS practices. Please contact your Attorney General today, a draft letter can be found here. Contact information for your Attorney General is also available here.
  3. Encourage your patients to voice their frustration! Resources are also available for your patients, including a draft letter for patients experiencing problems with Maintenance Choice. We would also like to ask your patient to contact their members of Congress and explain the importance of PBM transparency.
  4. If you have compelling evidence of unfair or illegal business practices please send them to grassroots@ncpanet.org.
