Chapter Member Recruitment Ideas for Fall 2010

Looking for new recruitment ideas to grow your chapter's membership base in the upcoming fall semester? Check out the following chapter recruitment ideas to retain and increase participation from your active members and stimulate the admission of new members!

  • Recognition is key to obtaining new members, retaining current members, and increasing active members. Find a unique way to recognize a new member's contribution at each meeting and give them something tangible to mark the recognition. Certificates are a great way to make someone's day, make others want to be involved, and are inexpensive if you print the certificate on colored paper using a computer program.

  • Find a niche and strive to be great at it. Like community pharmacy, the student body is your patient group and to attract more members you need a unique project platform. Develop a community service project centered on an area of pharmacy that interests the members and is different enough to stand out from the other student organizations. An example of this is participation in the NCPA Medication Disposal Program.

  • During membership drives, have computers ready to register students electronically or have a paper form available for them to fill out and hand in right at the event or meeting.

  • Create fundraisers that will grab people's attention and benefit students professionally. Students will remember and be impressed if you sell business cards, etiquette luncheon tickets, or even offer a CPR certification course.

  • Promote NCPA travel opportunities. Attending national meetings and conventions is always a great experience! At the beginning of the year, show pictures of students at the convention from the previous year. Fundraise throughout the year and use the money to help to decrease the cost of attendance at the NCPA Annual Convention or the NCPA Conference on National Legislation and Government Affairs. See below for information on the NCPA 112th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition coming up in October!

Congress Is Coming To Your Town
Your elected members of Congress will be in their home districts for the entire month of August campaigning for the November election. Click here to find your member of Congress and information on their district offices.

In August please:

  1. Meet with your members of Congress.

  2. Attend local town hall and other events with your elected officials in your community

  3. Elections Have Significant Pharmacy Implications. Click here to read and print the NCPA Community Pharmacy Platform to ensure pharmacists and patients ask the right questions before casting ballots in the 2010 elections. Vote to support your business and your patients.

  4. Send a message to your member of the U.S. House of Representatives today on this critical pending legislation:

  • The PBM Audit Reform and Transparency Act of 2010: (H.R. 5234) introduced by Reps. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and Jerry Moran (R-KS). This legislation imposes new Federal Pharmacy Benefit Manager transparency requirements, audit reforms and limit PBMs' ability to steer patients to mail order. Please ask you member to co-sponsor H.R. 5234.

  • DME Competitive Bidding: Please ask you member to co-sponsor H.R. 5235, The Medicare Access to Diabetes Supplies Act. This legislation would exclude diabetic supplies provided by small pharmacies from DME competitive bidding. Without this official exemption many small pharmacies would be left out of the program, putting beneficiaries' access to diabetes testing supplies at risk, particularly in rural or other underserved areas.

"I attended this convention to see if my dream to one day own my own independent pharmacy could become a reality. I was pleasantly surprised with how possible it is to get started in independent pharmacy and how successful one can be. The convention also fanned the flame of passion that I have for the profession of pharmacy and I could not be more proud of this profession and what we are doing to help communities across the nation."
